Original concepts:
Toyo Ito: Negative Space
When thinking about Toyo Ito what comes to mind are his detailed mosaic like structures that manage to float effortlessly and create a connection between outside and inside. These tapestries of 'negative' shapes and, in return, shadow create an abnormal space that is unique to a Toyo Ito building. What these approaches also show are his constant strive for detail and his attempts to always ground his designs.
Carlo Scarpa: Architectonic
Architectonic is an approach to architecture that appears very elemental and has a 'building block' aesthetic. What pushes these spaces beyond the 'building block' approach is the attention to detail that is strived for. Scarpa's level of detail is so ingrained in his buildings, that they look and feel as though they have risen from the ground. The intrinsic connection they have with the environment also support that.
'Electroliquid Aggregation' concept:
The architectonic like layering of experiences and strategies in a designers life provoke them to create unorthodox forms and transform atypical spaces.

Looking over the valley, the two monuments are seen - Toyo Ito in the foreground, while Carlo Scarpa is in the background.
With such contrasting designers as clients, merging such iconic ideologies wasn’t possible. Instead they are joined by nature - attempting to reconnect the user with Ito and Scarpa’s most commonly used material and source of inspiration. A lake pond in the center bridges the two monuments, creating a space for reflection.

Looking from the rear of the monument out over the ocean with hints of other spaces luring visitors.
The cluster of blocks that lookout over the distant horizon, bring into focus moments in the surroundings. This atypical space is common of Ito who endeavors to reconceptualise its meaning and purpose. Cleverly positioned subtracted/negative spaces in forms create reinforcing vistas that would have otherwise gone by the wayside.

Carlo Scarpa's monument formed around a natural water spring.
This monument formed around natural features (a water spring) has various viewing areas - on top of the tectonic layers, or at the heart of the structure. Crawling into the space, with the grunt of the water above, one feels unnerved by the atypical ‘room’. With the ocean and pond in the distance, a feeling of serenity is restored.
