Level 1: Jiro Ono - SUSHI
Ground Floor: Communal Space for eating and exhibiting
Basement: Skinya Kimura - Motorbike
This is my model now with more detail. I have tried to create links to the artists studios as I felt the spaces were too disjointed. I have created a physical link between Jiro Ono's studio and Shinya Kimura's subterranean basement by continuing the columns that support the upper shelf.
I have chosen to fill the spaces between the columns on the public ground level with metal grates. This feature aims to connect Kimura's den-like studio to his audience by bringing the ambience from the ground floor, downstairs.
Along the far back wall of Kimura's basement a glass light-well has been installed to allow light to filter into his space, thus filling the room with light from both ends of the room.

Hi Mitchell
ReplyDeleteI have had a look at your work and I commend you on the amount of thought and modelling work put in. You have come quite a long way and have explored a few ideas.
You have considered your work structurally which is great, it's just that there are some things that don't look quite structurally right. This can be fixed with a some of time and precedents. We will discuss this in studio tomorrow.
What you have done is to introduce a giant canopy for people to mill around under, there are many great examples of this approach, especially at expos http://www.dezeen.com/2010/02/17/centre-pompidou-metz-by-shigeru-ban/.
Having said that, it is best for you to also think about how people are going to be using the space underneath. The trick is not to get too caught up with your canopy (which may I add is still an important element that you spent quite a bit of time developing.
Instead of grating, perhaps you could consider raising the opening to the level below, so that for someone on the ground floor, the opening would be at seat height. Imagine if you were the person downstairs, you might feel like you were trapped in a sewer with people walking above you, especially if dirt from their shoes could fall into your space!
We can discuss more tomorrow.
Good luck!
